about

the Bug Incision concert series has been my favourite music thing in Calgary for many years. Improvised and new musics on a generally monthly basis in intimate spaces odd & familiar, the healthy mingling of acts & players both local & touring, young & more seasoned - it's a treasure as both listener and participant, pitting people who've just met into new musical forms as often as showcasing jazz/improv/noise/weirdo lifers. it is challenging but welcoming and I would credit it as one of the most important sources of experience & development I've made as a participant in improvised music. Bug Incision is a truly special thing in an unlikely locale - a niche within a niche within a city that tends to ignore even the normal shit and turns its nose even further at anything not engineered to sell beer to (ignoring that these shows often happen in breweries...)

the Bent Spoon Duo is one formation of what could be considered a sort of Bug Incision house band, here featuring head honcho/percussionist Chris Dadge and multi-instrumentalist Scott "Monty" Munro. (The trio formation rounded out by David Laing is also very much worth yr time). Performances have varied quite wildly from choices of instruments through approach, density, technique, whatever, but the key remains an erudite understanding and experience of improvisational/musical languages distilled into nuggets of puzzling, engaging music.

I'm drawn to the duo form for the immediacy and concurrent unpredictability of communication, like eavesdropping on a conversation - tenuous and new / familiar and warming / above else "direct" in a particular way that solo / larger ensembles don't scratch. On this Scotch Tape, Monty and Dadge present a spread of pieces recorded across two different sessions (sides a & b respectively), many delightful stabs at the musical eye from a number of distinct(ly odd) angles and approaches for trombone, viola, violin, guitar, drumset and percussion.

aged to perfection, Scotch Tape is serious(ly fun) and fucked up and I am pleased to help release this tiny slice of of the Bug Incision world to you. I'd urge you to look into bugincision.com as well.

Scott "Monty" Munro: trombone, viola, percussion
Chris Dadge: amplified violin, guitar, drumset, percussion

Recorded & mixed in Calgary, Alberta, 2010, by Bent Spoon Duo
Side A recorded at 308, Kensington
Side B recorded at Artunit, Renfrew

Scott Munro is a multi-instrumentalist of the first degree, known largely for his work as a guitarist and bassist (in ensembles such as Preoccupations, Chad VanGaalen & The Bleach Wipes, Lab Coast, and Child Actress), but also - to those in the know - a wonderful issuer of ideas on the double bass, viola, trombone, percussion, and vocals. He's been a core member of the Bent Spoon axiom since its 2002 inception, and has played with Jack Wright, Peter Evans, Ellwood Epps, Allison Cameron, Eric Chenaux, Darren Williams, and more.

Chris Dadge is the main operator and initiator of Bug Incision and its activities. Known primarily as a drummer across various genres including rock/pop (Lab Coast, Chad VanGaalen, Alvvays), improvised music (Eric Chenaux, Joe Morris, Mats Gustafsson, Peter Evans, John Oswald, Eugene Chadbourne and many others), and also as a producer/engineer (Jom Comyn, Sunglaciers, Crystal Eyes).
